Collecting begins in ~15 minutes:
Travess Smalley’s CRAWL
Collecting begins today at 16:00 UTC+0 and will last until August 13th. Learn more about the sales mechanics below. 👇
Welcome to the world of Travess Smalley, where mythic Greek labyrinths, artificial-life algorithms, and retro video games all coexist.
Experiencing CRAWL is a back-and-forth between watching and investigating. CRAWL isn’t a game, but sometimes it feels like one; there are rules, but there’s no specific objective.
CRAWL is a series of 512 unique artworks, each generated from a Python-code system authored by Smalley. Each artwork is a map that includes different patterns, colors, and textures. Collectors are encouraged to purchase multiple works to unlock the opportunity to “merge” their collected level maps into a larger 1/1 artwork, which unlocks new ways to explore.
The software artworks are accompanied by CRAWL WOODBLOCK SCREENSHOTS, a series of 10 unique woodblock prints created from images pulled from map levels in CRAWL.
Sale Mechanics:
CRAWL software artworks are priced at 0.065 ETH (~ USD $225.00)
Each unique map (PNG) is activated by — and explorable with — the accompanying custom CRAWL software viewer
When you collect more than one, individual artworks can be merged into custom 1/1 artworks through a merge functionality (outlined below)
CRAWL WOODBLOCK SCREENSHOTS are priced at 0.65 ETH (~ USD $2,259.00)
Each 1/1 print includes the corresponding digital negative image (PNG) sent to the collector’s digital wallet. (This image is inverted due to the printing process.)
Each print is ready to be shipped from the artist's studio immediately following the sale. Please add your email & shipping address to your Feral File account so we can ship your print.
CRAWL MULTI LEVEL Merge Mechanics:
Collectors who acquire multiple CRAWL software artworks can merge their maps into one new artwork that contains multiple levels. The original, single-layer artworks are burned and the individual pieces of software are combined into multiple levels to explore. The maps become stacked, like levels in a dungeon, and the magenta and cyan icons embedded in each individual map enable the collector to move between levels. There is no limit to the number of artworks you can merge; however, you cannot unmerge artworks. There is no fee to merge the artworks - only the cost of gas to execute the blockchain transaction.
Join the Livestream:
30 minutes after the sale opens, at 16:30 UTC+0, artist Travess Smalley and exhibition curator / Feral File co-founder Casey Reas will discuss the exhibition. Set a reminder here, and watch live across YouTube, X, or Instagram.
